OSHA's lab standard was created as a performance based standard, recognizing the unique nature of lab work and the lab environment. It allows the employer (i.e. UIC) to write its own specific program, the UIC Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP), based on the regulatory guidance. UIC then has to ensure that its employees follow the plan.
