Course Description

Introduction to Animal Care and Research at UIC
Training of all investigators who use animals in research, testing, and teaching is an important and mandatory function of the Animal Care Committee (ACC).  While the majority of training is “hands-on” in terms of particular techniques or procedures directly involving animals, this training module is designed to help investigators gain a better understanding of the regulatory bodies to which the ACC and the UIC are answerable, and the responsibilities of the ACC and investigators, as well as, the necessary elements of protocol preparation, protocol review, and what is needed for grant submission.

Training Goals
The goals of this training session are to gain a better understanding of:
• Federal regulatory bodies overseeing animal use in research, testing, and teaching
• The responsibilities of the Animal Care Committee in overseeing animal care and use at UIC
• The responsibilities of investigators in the conduct of research or teaching involving animals
• The necessary elements of protocol preparation and review
• The necessary elements involving animal research pertaining to grant submission
